Artist Information:

AKANE HOSAKA (SONORE)

MySpace / sonore.com/artist/akane+hosaka
With lunging rhythms and deliciously retro melodies, Akane Hosaka catapults us into a world of gleeful wallabies and drummer boy monkeys. References are to 60s and 70s precursors of electropop, but her true inspiration actually comes from the visual world and lies in graphic forms and architectural fantasy: Keiji Ito, Archigram or Bruno Munari.

YMCK (AVEX TRAX)

MySpace / sonore.com/artist/ymck
Chiptunes are invading the planet. YMCK have set themselves to develop the aesthetics of an 8-bit world, from now until eternity. Using pixelised graphics and compositions strictly limited to the sounds of 1980s game consoles, YMCK get a kick out of working within narrow constraints. They clear ground in a binary vision of primary colours and play light, elegant electro, a million miles from the usual brash club fare.

BABY-Q (BABY-Q LAB.)

MySpace / sonore.com/artist/baby-q
Combining inhuman jerks with androgynous gyrations, Baby-Q’s routines put us at the centre of a waking nightmare and draw the curtain on our unconscious desires. Taking us down sterile corridors and chambers filled with heady scent, Yoko Higashino’s choreographies are just so many mirrors for emotions we dare not admit to. Baby-Q will be appearing in front of the Nîmes crowds for the second time and will be presenting her new creation “Watashi wa sosorareru / I am aroused”.

ASA-CHANG & JUNRAY (KI/OON)

MySpace / sonore.com/artist/asa-chang+and+junray
ASA-CHANG & Junray concerts take place on ground level on woven straw mats or in the hollows of Japanese gardens. Their perfectly balanced music is devastatingly expressive, combining cinematographic qualities and the choreography of dreams. A respectful pilgrimage through a wide range of influences, ASA-CHANG & Junray are something of a travelling circus in which fairground drums meet Indian percussion and minutely measured vocal collage.

DODDODO (SONORE)

MySpace / sonore.com/artist/doddodo
This girl from Osaka is a fury. Armed with just two samplers, her voice tears out of her throat in immediate and contradictory sound. She ties her hair in the shape of a palm tree and blackens her face, alternately harpy, alternately sweet young thing. DODDODO’s music is direct, sometimes slightly absurd, also, as if by accident, hip-hop, then furious gush.

About SONORE...
Founded as a record company in 1998, SONORE also became an artistic agency (JAAPAN) in 2008 at the same time as celebrating its 10th anniversary. Booking, providing management, music sales and publishing, SONORE has discovered so much talent in Japan that it has had to develop and broaden its activities to keep pace. With 28 disks out to date (current releases: Akane Hosaka and applehead), an authoritative work on Japanese music (Japanese Independent Music, 2001), contributions to films and documentaries (Body Modification Freaks, 2008) and numerous European bookings (Maywa Denki at the Les Bains Numériques festival at Enghien-les-bains on 6 June 2008 or Doravideo at the Universal Exhibition in Zaragossa, 16-17 August 2008), the Nîmes Biennial, the Japanese Experience (LEX), organised together with the Theatre of Nîmes must be one of SONORE’s major achievements so far. LEX 2009 will present all the thrill of contemporary Japanese creativity, bringing 19 music, dance and performance projects to Nîmes from 24 to 28 March 2009 (YMCK, Baby-Q, ASA-CHANG & Junray). In between times, SONORE will be celebrating its 10th anniversary on Friday 10 October 2008 at Super Deluxe in Tokyo (“a LEX 2009 sneak preview”) and on Sunday 23 November at Club Noon in Osaka (“Mozarella Panic Tour”) as part of the Osaka Festival of European Film.
